How it goes

A hand-built server is the easiest case: the mail is already in Dovecot, and what usually takes the time is the years of configuration nobody wrote down.

• Virtual domains, mailboxes and aliases are read from your existing configuration.
• Maildir is transferred directly, or synchronised over IMAP if you prefer to keep the server running.
• Relay hosts, SRS, DKIM keys and SPF records are carried over.
• The cutover is a DNS change once both servers hold the same mail.

What you get either way

• Tested as one unit SMTP, IMAP, spam filtering, antivirus, webmail and administration are exercised together against real servers before an image ships. A version bump in one part cannot quietly break another.
• Backward compatible Your data and your configuration survive upgrades. We have not asked anyone to reinstall since 2014.
• No babysitting Upgrading is always the same thing: replace the container. No procedure, no migration script, seconds of downtime. We can do it for you.
